Ancient World, Nepal, Lichchhavi Dynasty, Narendradeva (641-680 AD), Copper, 7.00 gms, 22.82 mm,
Obv. Bull standing right; above, crescent.
Rev. Sun, Nagari legend “Pashupati” within dotted circle.
Narendradeva is one of the most illustrious kings of the Licchavi dynasty, known for restoring his family's throne with the help of the Tibetan Empire. His reign marked a peak in Nepalese art, culture, and diplomatic relations. The "Pashupati" series of coins is perhaps the most famous of all ancient Nepalese coinage. By replacing the earlier "Mananka" and "Vaishravana" types with the Pashupati legend, Narendradeva solidified the religious identity of the Kathmandu Valley, centering it around the Pashupatinath Temple, which remains the holiest shrine in Nepal to this day.
